Richard Mille is recognized all over the world for making some of the craziest and most sought after timepieces in the world. Richard Mille watches have a starting price of around $50,000 and go all the way up to….. well $1.7m. The Felipe Massa Sapphire Tourbillon Split Seconds Competition Chronograph is an engineering marvel and will set you back an astonishing $1.7m. For that kind of money you could buy yourself a Koenigsegg Agera R or 2 Porsche 918 Spyder (one to leave in the south of France and another one for your Palace in Jeddah. You could also buy 8.5 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG or 57 brand new Honda Accord.
The particularity of this watch other than its extremely complicated tourbillon movement is the fact that the case is made of synthetic sapphire. Richard Mille warns that the sapphire is fragile and will crack if the watch is dropped. The story goes that Richard Mille engineers cringed when, in their presence, a Russian collector nonchalantly tried on the prototype and asked his companion how he would look wearing the watch on his yacht. “Better,” a company official advised, “to wear it in the house.”
Personally, if I had that kind of paper I would buy a Patek Philippe Skymoon Tourbillion. But bear in mind that at least one watch maker needs to cater to the oligarchs and Richard Mille does just that.
